Don White is the father of five and a former 8th grade math teacher here in Wisconsin – he left teaching after burning out, in part because the state legislature continually fails to adequately fund public schools in the state.

He points out that Wisconsinites clearly see the value in public education, given that most referendums to fund public schools pass. But it’s well past time for state lawmakers to step up: “It’s very disappointing that schools have to depend on taxpayers voting in these referendums,” he said.

“The Legislature spends at will on so many things but doesn’t fully fund schools. That doesn’t make sense to me. They talk about saving money at the state level, but they just push responsibility to local property taxpayers. Depending on referendums to fund our schools is very unfair, and it’s more glaring now than in the past.”
