Fund wisconsin

Public Schools

and fulfill our commitment to our children

The Problem

Every child in Wisconsin deserves a well-rounded education in safe, supportive classrooms. But decades of underfunding have stretched many public schools to the verge of crisis, leading to larger class sizes, crumbling school infrastructure, and fewer opportunities for our students.

This didn’t happen by accident — it’s the result of the state legislature failing to meet their constitutionally-mandated responsibility to adequately fund public schools.

Wisconsin can and should honor its promise of a universal, quality public education for all our children. Because when we invest in our schools, kids thrive, families stay, and communities grow stronger.

In 2026, we’re taking action. Students, parents, advocates, educators, school districts, and community members who support stronger schools in Wisconsin have come together in the Fund Wisconsin Public Schools Coalition to support a landmark lawsuit against the Wisconsin Legislature for failing to adequately fund public schools.

No matter where we live or what our politics are, we all want kids to be safe, supported, and prepared for their futures – and this lawsuit is a critical step toward fulfilling that commitment.

The SOLUTION

Fund Wisconsin Public Schools is a broad-based coalition made up of supporters from across the state. Our mission is to share the story of why the state must finally meet its responsibility and properly fund public schools. We fully support this lawsuit.

Who We Are

WHY NOW?

For far too long, schools have been increasingly forced to cut budgets and turn to local taxpayers just to cover basic operating expenses. That’s not a sign that communities don’t value public education – we do, and a majority of recent school referendums have passed.

But these referendums are a band-aid, not a long-term solution. And community support for constant referendums is just not sustainable.

Families, educators, and community leaders shouldn’t have to campaign just to keep school doors open. Wisconsin has the resources — and the constitutional obligation — to do better.

We support this lawsuit because Wisconsin public schools have exhausted all other options. It's past time for the Wisconsin Legislature to properly fund public schools.

In February 2026, Wisconsin community members, school districts, and education associations filed a lawsuit against the Wisconsin State Assembly, Wisconsin State Senate, and members of the Joint Committee on Finance – Wisconsin PTA, et.al. V. Wisconsin Assembly.

The goal of this landmark lawsuit? To have the court hold the Legislature responsible for fulfilling its constitutional obligation to adequately fund Wisconsin public schools — so that every Wisconsin student has an equal opportunity education.
